NEWSLETTER FOR
HURLEY CRICKET CLUB MEMBERS
OCTOBER 2009

A quick update on what’s happening between now and the end of the year and what has happened already this season.

First of all - Important Dates for the diary

Saturday 7 November  Work party from 10.30am to 12.30pm

Please come along to the end of season work party. See the attached list of jobs to be done and bring appropriate footwear, tools and gardening gloves. Some tools will be available and a good turn out by players would be helpful.

Saturday 7 November Hurley Cricket Club AGM 2009 1.00pm

The Committee has decided to hold the AGM during daylight again and on a Saturday this year and there will be free burgers and a bar open (not free) for those who attend the work party prior to the AGM. Please do come along, support the club and offer your services on the committee if you feel you can.

What have we done over the summer 2009?

Grounds

Over the summer Hurley CC has taken delivery of a replacement Hayter mower for the square and a Sisis rotorake  (both second hand) together with a wicket marker and a seed spreader (new items) using a generous donation from Ron George, a regular spectator on Saturdays, and club funds. At the end of September the square was scarified, loamed and new grass seed sown so all we need now is the grass to take root and be sturdy for next season. The square has been cordoned off for the winter months with a chicken wire perimeter. Thanks are due to Jeff Dawson for his work on the square all this season and to Wilson Carlisle and Berks CC for the loan of their equipment to make the scarifying and loaming possible.

Electronic Scoreboard

The electronic scoreboard has been adapted with red LEDs and now works a treat. Thanks are due to Mike Walton for all his efforts on this.

Far corner of the field

The second part of the far corner which was sown with grass seed in April is now mown regularly by the turf trooper and there have been many compliments on how much better that area of the field now looks. When the square was scarified at the end of the season all the grass and loam debris was placed over the concrete slabs in the corner. Work has already started on emptying the grab bags full of last year’s rotted down leaves onto the top of the mound. Daffodils, bluebells and other plants will be planted there this autumn so that next spring we will have some floral displays there. The final nettle patch will be dug over this autumn/winter and laid to grass next spring to complete the project. We are still hoping to obtain a wooden bench to place in this area.

Clubhouse

You may have noticed a replacement PVC double glazed window in the clubhouse lounge area. This is from an insurance claim following a burglary at the club in July 2008. If anyone knows the whereabouts of the framed print (No 2 of the limited edition) of the club which vanished at about the same time we would be delighted to see it returned.

Socials

Some successful socials were held in 2009 culminating in the 50th anniversary celebration on 12th September. We saw members current and past attending and enjoyed excellent cricket and sustenance on the day. There are photos on the website. You may recognise old friends amongst them.
